CPI Meets Positive Gamma: The SPX Levels That Could Determine the Next Move

Wednesday’s inflation report could determine whether stocks extend their rally or face renewed selling pressure as rising Treasury yields threaten to disrupt a relatively calm options market.

The September Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be released Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m. ET, giving investors another important inflation update ahead of the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting.

Stocks enter Wednesday’s CPI report with the S&P 500 supported by positive dealer gamma, a positioning regime that has helped suppress market volatility despite rising Treasury yields. SpotGamma’s options models identify 7,700 as the key downside risk level and 7,825 as near-term resistance. Whether CPI pushes the index outside this range could matter more for traders than the inflation number itself.

Despite Wednesday’s major inflation catalyst, short-dated SPX implied volatility remains relatively low. SpotGamma’s volatility term structure shows limited near-term fear, with higher volatility priced into later expirations as investors approach additional economic reports, the Fed meeting, and November’s midterm elections.

This suggests traders are not positioning for an extreme immediate shock, although the market remains vulnerable to a surprise.

What Wall Street Expects

Economists expect headline inflation to accelerate in September, driven primarily by higher energy prices.

Core inflation will likely matter more than the headline number.

Because core CPI excludes food and energy, it provides a clearer picture of underlying inflation pressures. A reading near the expected 0.2% would suggest inflation remains relatively contained outside energy, potentially allowing the Fed to hold rates steady this month.

A hotter reading, particularly 0.3% or higher, could strengthen expectations for additional rate hikes and place renewed pressure on equities.

Heading into the report, futures markets imply only about an 18% probability of an October rate hike, although expectations for tightening by December remain considerably higher.

What the Options Market Is Pricing

Despite significant macroeconomic uncertainty, equity volatility remains relatively subdued.

The VIX is trading near 15.5, while SpotGamma’s recent analysis highlights how continued put selling and positive dealer gamma have helped suppress realized volatility.

As of Friday’s close, SPX options implied a roughly 0.9% move, or approximately 72 points, through Wednesday’s expiration, including the CPI event. The implied range through Friday’s monthly options expiration expands to approximately 1.3%.

These figures represent cumulative options-implied ranges, not predictions of the CPI-day move alone.

The key consideration is how dealer positioning responds once the inflation uncertainty passes.

If CPI meets expectations, short-dated implied volatility could decline as event uncertainty fades. With dealers positioned in positive gamma, hedging activity may help absorb market fluctuations and keep price movements relatively contained.

However, an unexpectedly hot report could reverse that dynamic, particularly if SPX breaks below important gamma support.

SpotGamma’s synthetic OI model highlights significant positive gamma concentrations near current SPX levels, including a Low Volatility Point around 7,765. This positioning may help suppress volatility and contain price swings into Friday’s options expiration.

However, 7,700 remains the key downside risk pivot. A sustained break below that level could shift dealer positioning into negative gamma, amplifying selling pressure. On the upside, 7,825 represents important near-term resistance.

CPI Scenarios: What Traders Should Watch

The market’s reaction to CPI will depend less on the headline number and more on how core inflation impacts Treasury yields and dealer positioning. A softer reading could support equities and encourage a move toward SPX 7,825, while an in-line report may allow existing positive-gamma positioning to keep volatility contained.

However, a hotter-than-expected print could challenge the critical 7,700 support level, potentially triggering increased volatility and accelerated selling pressure.

The Options Trader Takeaway

Wednesday’s CPI report is about more than inflation. It’s a test of whether the market’s low-volatility environment can survive another potential interest-rate shock.

A cooler report could reinforce positive gamma positioning and keep the equity rally intact. A hotter reading could trigger a repricing of rate expectations and challenge key support levels.

Importantly, CPI arrives just two days before October monthly options expiration. Even if Wednesday’s report produces a muted market reaction, the expiration of sizable gamma positions on Friday could change dealer hedging dynamics and leave equities more vulnerable to larger price swings next week.

Bottom line: Watch core CPI relative to the 0.2% consensus, the reaction in Treasury yields, and SPX 7,700 support. Holding above this critical gamma level could keep volatility contained and allow equities to challenge 7,825 resistance. A sustained break below 7,700, however, could signal a shift toward higher volatility and more aggressive selling pressure.
